The MicroBT Whatsminer M79S produces 1,350 TH/s of SHA-256 hashrate at 20,000W wall draw through a hydro cooled chassis, delivering 14.815 J/TH efficiency in the rated performance mode. It is the flagship of MicroBT's M70 generation, launched at the Bitcoin MENA 2025 conference in Abu Dhabi by MicroBT founder Yang Zuoxing, and it is currently one of only two Bitcoin miners in the world capable of true petahash level single unit output. The other is Bitmain's Antminer S23 Hydro 3U at 1,160 TH/s and 11,000W.
Hydro cooling differentiates the M79S from air cooled alternatives. A pressurized liquid loop circulates coolant directly through heat exchangers mounted against the mining chips, removing the 20 kW thermal load with no high speed fans. The result is 50 dB near silent operation at a power density that air cooled hardware cannot match. Ambient airflow, dust filtration, and fan bearing wear all stop being operational concerns. The tradeoff is infrastructure: the M79S requires an engineered hydro cooling loop with pumps, cooling distribution units, heat exchangers, and leak safe fittings sized for the 20 kW continuous thermal output.
MicroBT exposes two operating modes on the M79S. Rated mode produces the full 1,350 TH/s at 20,000W and 14.815 J/TH, targeting maximum hashrate for operators with cheap industrial electricity. A proprietary Low Power Mode runs at approximately 14,000W and 13.5 J/TH, trading peak output for meaningfully better efficiency. The Low Power setting matters for facilities managing peak rate periods, summer thermal loads, or regions where electricity costs make full draw marginal. Switching between modes happens through the Whatsminer management interface without downtime or firmware changes.
The M79S sits at the top of a deep M70 product family. Air cooled tiers include the M70 and M70S for small and mid size operations that want efficiency improvements without committing to liquid cooling infrastructure. The hydro cooled tier includes the M73S, M76S, and M79S, with the M73S+ reaching a leading 12.5 J/TH efficiency at up to 600 TH/s. MicroBT also produces immersion cooled variants in the same generation for facilities running dielectric fluid tanks. Across the entire M70 family, efficiency ranges from 14.5 J/TH down to 12.5 J/TH, with the M79S trading some per terahash efficiency for maximum absolute hashrate per unit.
Power infrastructure is the hard constraint. The M79S requires 380 to 480V three phase commercial power, drawing approximately 48 amps at 415V or 42 amps at 480V sustained. Standard residential or small facility electrical systems cannot handle the 20 kW continuous load. Hydro cooling loop sizing must match the thermal output: most operators integrate the M79S into existing CDU infrastructure alongside Bitmain S23 Hydro units or other high density hardware. The 585 x 368 x 133 mm compact chassis and 37 kg weight support high density rack deployment in professional data center environments.
Bitcoin mining economics at the M79S power class depend heavily on electricity rate. At $0.07 per kWh the unit draws approximately $33.60 per day in electricity against roughly $44 to $45 in current Bitcoin revenue at 1.35 PH/s, netting around $10 to $11 per day in profit at current difficulty. At $0.04 per kWh industrial rates, daily electricity drops to approximately $19.20 and daily profit roughly doubles. The narrow margin at residential power explains why the M79S is built exclusively for industrial operators with negotiated power rates, not home or small facility deployment.
