HydroMiner — Water-Cooled Mining Done Right

Swap fans for a closed water loop: ~50 dB instead of 80, 15–20% better efficiency, and 3–5× the rack density. Here's how it works — and how to buy or host one.

The Short Answer (01)

What Is A
HydroMiner?

The one change that shifts noise, efficiency and density all at once — explained in plain terms before we go deep.

A HydroMiner is a water-cooled ASIC miner. Instead of high-RPM fans, an internal cold plate sits directly on the hashboards, and a closed water loop carries chip heat out to an external radiator or CDU. That one change shifts three things at once: noise drops to ~50 dB (vs 75–85 dB on air), efficiency improves 15–20% because cooler chips run at lower voltage, and rack density rises 3–5× because 3U hydro units stack far tighter than air chassis.

~50 dB

Near-Silent

Roughly a quiet conversation, versus 75–85 dB of fan roar on air-cooled rigs.

15–20%

More Efficient

Cooler, more stable chips run at lower voltage for the same hashrate.

3–5×

Denser Racks

Compact 3U hydro chassis pack far more hashrate into every square metre.

+30–50%

Longer Life

Lower thermal stress extends hardware lifespan well beyond air cooling.

The trade-off is infrastructure: you need a coolant loop and usually 380–415V three-phase power. Below, we cover the cooling types you can choose, how the loop works step by step, the full miner lineup, power requirements, and whether to run hydro at home or have us host it for you.

The Types Of
Hydro Cooling

Hydro scales from a single miner with one wall radiator up to a 400-unit container. These are the four building blocks — pick the one that matches your size, then we spec the rest.

1–2 miners · Home / small

External Hydro Radiator

The simplest entry point: a single dry-cooler radiator mounted on a wall or outside, plumbed straight to one or two hydro units with quick-connect hoses. No CDU needed at this scale. Size it to 120–130% of your miner's power draw.

CDU + Dry Cooler

The Coolant Distribution Unit is the heart of any multi-miner loop: it pumps coolant through your miners and rejects heat through an outdoor dry cooler. Capacities run 50kW–400kW. In cold climates, free cooling pushes PUE close to 1.0.

How It Works (Step By Step) (03)

How A Hydro
Loop Works

It's a single closed loop of treated water — no oil, no submersion. Cool water in, chip heat out, repeat. Here's the journey water takes through your system.

Chilled coolant supply from the CDU
01

Chilled Supply

The CDU or dry cooler feeds cooled water (~30–40°C) to the supply manifold at the head of the rack — the start of the loop.

Manifold splitting coolant flow to each miner
02

Manifold Split

The manifold divides flow to every miner. Each connects with tool-free quick-disconnect fittings — push on by hand, no leaks.

Internal cold plate bonded to hashboard chips
03

Internal Cold Plate

Water flows through a cold plate bonded directly to the hashboard chips, absorbing heat and leaving 10–20°C warmer.

Return manifold collecting warm coolant
04

Return Collection

Warm water from all miners gathers in the return manifold as one combined stream, headed back toward the CDU.

Dry cooler rejecting heat to outside air
05

Heat Rejection

The CDU dumps that heat outside via a dry cooler — with near-zero fan power in cold weather, then the cycle repeats.

The Hook-Up

Two quick-disconnect ports on the back of every unit — one supply, one return. Hoses push on by hand, and a miner swaps out in under two minutes. You unplug hoses instead of power cables; that serviceability is why operators pick hydro over immersion. See couplings & fittings →

The Coolant

Deionised water with a corrosion inhibitor (or a water-glycol mix in the cold), in a sealed loop — no dielectric fluid, no submersion. Each miner needs 4–8 L/min minimum flow. Never use tap water: minerals scale up cold plates and can kill a hashboard as surely as a dead fan.

How Much Power A HydroMiner Needs

Hydro miners are high-draw machines. Getting the electrical side right is the difference between a smooth install and a stalled project — here's what to plan for.

  • 5,500–11,000W per unit — e.g. S23 Hydro ~5.5 kW, S23 Hyd 3U ~11 kW.
  • 380–415V three-phase for most multi-unit deployments; a 1–3 unit home setup can run a dedicated high-amp circuit.
  • Radiator at 120–130% of total miner draw — 140–150% in hot climates above 35°C.
  • A CDU once you run 3+ units; below that a single external radiator can carry the load.
  • Plan the loop for 150% of today's capacity — manifolds and pipe diameters are painful to expand later.

Two Ways To Run It (06)

Home vs.
Hosting

You can absolutely run hydro at home — or skip the infrastructure entirely and let us host it. Here's the honest comparison so you can pick the right path.

Rule of thumb from our team: home hydro makes sense for a small, quiet, self-managed setup with the right circuit. Above roughly ten units — or if you don't want to manage power, cooling and repairs — hosting wins on total cost of ownership. You can even buy the miner and add hosting in the same order.

HydroMiner FAQ

The questions buyers ask most — short, specific answers you can act on.

What is a HydroMiner?+
A HydroMiner is a water-cooled ASIC miner. Instead of fans, an internal cold plate is bonded to the hashboards and a closed water loop carries chip heat out to an external radiator or CDU. The result is ~50 dB noise (vs 75–85 dB for air), 15–20% better efficiency because cooler chips need less voltage, and 3–5× higher rack density.
How does a hydro cooling loop work?+
Cooled water (~30–40°C) is fed from a CDU or dry cooler into a supply manifold at the head of the rack. Each miner connects with quick-disconnect fittings, water flows through an internal cold plate over the chips, exits 10–20°C warmer, collects in a return manifold, and returns to the CDU where heat is rejected to outside air. It's a sealed, closed loop using treated water — not oil.
How much power does a HydroMiner need?+
Individual hydro miners draw from about 5,500W (Antminer S23 Hydro, 580 TH/s) up to ~11,000W for 3U units like the S23 Hyd 3U at 1,160 TH/s. Most deployments run on 380–415V three-phase power. A small 1–3 unit home setup can run on a dedicated high-amperage circuit, but operations above ~10 units almost always use three-phase distribution.
Can I run a HydroMiner at home?+
Yes. A small 1–3 unit hydro setup is feasible at home with a dedicated high-amperage circuit, space for an external radiator, and basic plumbing. Single units can pair with an external hydro radiator from our equipment range. For larger or noise-sensitive deployments, hosting is usually more practical and cost-effective.
Does MillionMiner sell and host hydro miners?+
Both. We sell 65+ hydro-cooled miners with free worldwide DDP delivery and full warranty, and we run U.S. hosting facilities with dedicated hydro infrastructure at $0.07/kWh and 99.9% uptime. You can buy a hydro miner and add hosting in a single order, and our team handles warranty claims and on-site repairs.
What is a CDU in a hydro mining system?+
A CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) is the central pump and heat-exchange unit of a hydro loop. It circulates coolant through the miners via manifolds and routes heated coolant to an external dry cooler for rejection. A CDU is typically needed once you run three or more hydro miners; below that, a single external radiator can be enough.
Which hydro miner is the most efficient?+
The Bitmain Antminer S23 Hydro reaches 9.5 J/TH at 580 TH/s — currently the most efficient Bitcoin miner in our catalog — matched by the S23 Hyd 3U at 1,160 TH/s. The Bitdeer SealMiner A4 Ultra Hydro is comparable at 9.45 J/TH and 886 TH/s.
What's the difference between hydro and immersion cooling?+
Hydro circulates treated water through internal cold plates inside purpose-built ASICs (e.g. the Antminer Hydro series) and keeps the miner in a standard rack. Immersion submerges standard air-cooled ASICs in dielectric fluid inside a tank. Hydro is simpler and faster to service (swap a unit in under 2 minutes); immersion reaches the lowest PUE and longest lifespan but needs tanks and fluid management.
