The four Helium updates every operator who took a break in 2024 missed
1. HIP-138 "Return to HNT" — IOT and MOBILE emissions stopped (Jan 29, 2025)
On January 29, 2025, the Helium network ratified what the community had been arguing about for two years: the three-token model (HNT plus IOT plus MOBILE) was simplified back into a single token. IOT and MOBILE emissions ceased entirely. Hotspots that earn rewards for proof-of-coverage and data transfer are now paid directly in HNT, with the subnetwork allocation decided by each subDAO's Utility Score (the legacy HIP-51 / HIP-88 framework, but settled in HNT). The proposal also terminated the 30% HNT emission share that historically went to HST holders, redirecting roughly 11 million HNT per cycle back to ecosystem participants — meaning operators receive a materially larger slice of every block. Two operator implications: first, every "earn IOT and MOBILE" article on the internet is stale and should be ignored. Second, the 18.2 billion MOBILE tokens sitting in the Helium Foundation's Operations Fund were burned outright as part of the HIP, which is the largest single token destruction event in the network's history. Legacy IOT and MOBILE you hold from before January 2025 can be swapped to HNT through the Helium Wallet or through Jupiter (the Solana DEX aggregator) at the running treasury rate, and the swap pool will remain open indefinitely.

2. August 1, 2025 halving — emissions cut from 15M to 7.5M HNT per year
The August 2025 halving is the largest single change to operator economics in two years. Annual HNT issuance dropped from 15 million to 7.5 million; daily issuance is now approximately 20,548 HNT. Proof-of-coverage rewards are the bucket that gets cut in half. Data transfer rewards are unaffected — they scale with Data Credits actually burned for IoT packets or Mobile gigabytes, not with the emission schedule. (Helium Halving 2025 announcement)
In practice: a coverage-only IoT hotspot earning 0.2 HNT/day before the halving now earns ~0.1 HNT/day. A high-traffic Mobile hotspot whose earnings are predominantly carrier offload — where you get paid per gigabyte transferred — barely feels the halving at all. This is the single most important strategic shift in 2026 Helium economics: data transfer matters more than coverage, full stop. The next halving is August 1, 2027 (down to 3.75M HNT/yr); the one after that, August 2029 (1.875M HNT/yr).

3. The discretionary burn experiment ran for four months, then was suspended
From August 18, 2025 through January 2, 2026, Helium Mobile routed 100% of subscriber revenue to open-market HNT purchases that were then burned for Data Credits. The mechanic generated roughly $2.9M in discretionary HNT burns in Q4 2025 alone ($31,765/day) and pushed total network DC burn above HNT emissions for the first time. The Helium Mobile team suspended the experiment on January 2, 2026 to refocus capital on subscriber acquisition and carrier offload growth. Any guide written in late 2025 that anchors its bull case on "Mobile burns are higher than emissions" is anchored on a mechanism that no longer runs.

4. Mobile mapping rewards eliminated; Cloud Points replaced them
HIP-148 (passed Q4 2025) eliminated the Mobile Mapping reward pool after documented gaming made it impossible to police at scale. The 20% of Mobile emissions that previously paid for movement-verified coverage now flows 50/50 to the Service Provider Pool and the Data Transfer Pool, both denominated in HNT. Subscriber loyalty is now handled out-of-protocol via Cloud Points — Helium Mobile's in-app rewards that can be redeemed for eGift cards or donated to charity. If you were planning to drive around with a Helium Mobile phone for tokens, that economy is closed.
Is Helium mining still worth it in 2026? The honest operator answer
It depends entirely on which subnet you deploy on, where you deploy it, and what hardware you buy. Here is the unvarnished math, using Q4 2025 / Q1 2026 network data.

IoT hotspot reality check
The entire IoT subnetwork burned approximately $246 of Data Credits per day across all hotspots in Q1 2026 (roughly 0.6% of total network DC burn). That number divided across roughly 43,000 active IoT hotspots is the data-transfer reward floor: a few cents per day, network average. Proof-of-coverage rewards push the typical well-placed IoT hotspot to between 0.07 and 0.30 HNT per day, which at the $1.37 HNT close of Q4 2025 is roughly $0.10 to $0.41 daily — call it $3 to $12 per month. Top hotspots in dense, well-positioned hexes still earn 0.5–1.0 HNT/day, but that requires elevation, line-of-sight, and the right antenna setup, not luck.
Mobile hotspot reality check
Mobile is the inverse story. The Mobile subnet burned roughly $56,640/day in Q4 2025 (99.8% of network revenue) on a base of 121,138 Mobile hotspots — a per-hotspot average of $0.47/day. But that average is brutally skewed. Hotspots in dense indoor venues, transit hubs, casinos, and busy storefronts earn many multiples of the network average through the Carrier Offload Program, which pays approximately $0.50 in HNT per gigabyte of cellular traffic offloaded onto Helium's spectrum. Hotspots in residential neighborhoods or low-foot-traffic areas earn close to zero until the network starts routing traffic through them.
How Helium mining actually works in 2026 (post-Solana, post-HIP-138 architecture)
Helium is no longer its own blockchain. On April 18, 2023, the Helium L1 was sunset and the entire network state, including every hotspot NFT, every HNT balance, and every governance vote, was migrated to Solana. The roughly 3,700 validators that ran the old chain were retired, and the 6.85% of HNT emissions that previously paid them was reallocated to subDAO reward pools — a one-time +2M HNT/year tailwind for hotspot owners in year one post-migration.
The mining loop itself works like this in 2026:
  1. Your hotspot continuously transmits LoRaWAN beacon packets (IoT) or maintains a live Wi-Fi or CBRS radio session (Mobile), providing wireless coverage that sensor devices and cellular subscribers connect to.
  2. Nearby hotspots witness and report your beacons to the Helium oracle on Solana; in the Mobile subnet, the radio session data is logged against your hotspot's asserted location NFT, confirming that real traffic was offloaded.
  3. The Helium oracle runs a reward calculation algorithm each epoch (roughly every 24 hours), applying transmit scale, witness scale, hex density bonuses, and the current emission schedule to produce a precise HNT reward amount for each hotspot across both subnets.
  4. The oracle posts the reward transaction to the Solana blockchain as a standard SPL token transfer; the HNT amount accrues to your hotspot's claimable balance, attached to the hotspot NFT, and is visible in the Helium Wallet app within minutes of each epoch close.
  5. You open the Helium Wallet app, navigate to your hotspot, and tap "Claim Rewards" to broadcast a Solana transaction that moves the accrued HNT from the claimable balance into your wallet's SPL token account — from which you can hold, swap, or send to an exchange at any time.
There are three reward sources flowing into that distribution: proof-of-coverage (scaled by hex density, transmit scale, and witness scale — basically, how unique and well-placed your coverage is), data transfer (a pro-rata share of the DC burned for IoT packets that traversed your gateway, or in the Mobile subnet, a pro-rata share of the carrier offload revenue), and on the Mobile side, Service Provider rewards (HNT payments from carriers like AT&T and Telefónica routed through the Mobile subnet for offload). All three flow in HNT after HIP-138.

Data Credits — the most misquoted number in Helium guides
A Data Credit is a USD-pegged utility token created by burning HNT. 1 DC equals exactly $0.00001 USD, priced via the Pyth oracle on Solana. That is the price per Data Credit, not per byte — a confusion that propagates through dozens of "explainer" articles. IoT applications burn 1 DC per 24-byte payload chunk transmitted through any hotspot. Mobile bills at $0.50/GB, which works out to 50,000 DC per gigabyte. DCs are non-transferable after minting, can be delegated to an OUI (Organization Unique Identifier) wallet exactly once, and only the OUI can spend them on packets.
Net Emissions is the mechanism that recycles burned HNT back into the reward pool, capped at 1,643.83561643 HNT per day with a 6/7 smoothing function applied. When DC burn exceeds the cap (Q4 2025 was the first quarter this happened, due to the now-suspended discretionary burn experiment), the cap binds and the surplus deflates the float. The reward pool can never exceed the cap, but it can shrink in deflationary quarters.
IoT subnet vs Mobile subnet — which one should you actually run?
These are two completely different businesses with completely different hardware, completely different reward dynamics, and completely different operator profiles. Pick wrong and you waste money. Pick right and you compound a real coverage asset.
IoT subnet (LoRaWAN, 868 MHz EU / 915 MHz US / 923 MHz AS)
  • Hardware cost: $420–$549 for a current-firmware hotspot (SenseCAP M2 Pro or MNTD Goldspot); antenna and cable add $30–$80
  • Monthly earnings: $3–$45 for a typical well-placed hotspot; top 10% units in dense, elevated hexes earn $50–$120/month at Q4 2025 HNT pricing
  • Electricity draw: 5–8W per hotspot — so minimal; the entire operating cost is typically under $2/month in electricity, making profitability almost purely dependent on location and HNT price
  • Best use case: rural and suburban coverage gaps where there are few competing hotspots — IoT sensor customers include agricultural logistics, cold-chain monitoring, asset tracking, and smart parking operators who need long-range, low-power connectivity
  • Reward risk: proof-of-coverage rewards will halve again in August 2027; operators whose income is mostly PoC-based should model for another 50% cut to earnings in 18 months
  • Verdict: deploy IoT if you have strong elevation access, low nearby hotspot density, and are comfortable with a low-yield, low-maintenance long-term hold — do not deploy expecting quick ROI in urban areas already covered by 50+ hotspots
Mobile subnet (CBRS small cells, outdoor Wi-Fi, indoor Wi-Fi)
  • Hardware cost: $649–$799 for the Helium Mobile Outdoor Wi-Fi Hotspot or MNTD Fi Pro; CBRS small cell setups (FreedomFi + Baicells) cost $1,800–$2,500 plus SAS coordination fees
  • Monthly earnings: highly location-dependent — network average is roughly $14/month, but top-decile commercial venue hotspots earn $300–$1,500+/month through Carrier Offload at ~$0.50/GB offloaded
  • Electricity draw: 10–25W depending on hardware (Wi-Fi outdoor) or 30–60W (CBRS Baicells small cell); requires a dedicated 100+ Mbps fiber or cable backhaul to be eligible for carrier offload payouts
  • Best use case: high foot-traffic commercial venues — transit stations, hotels, malls, stadiums, university campuses, busy storefronts, or any location where hundreds of cellular subscribers pass through daily and benefit from a local Wi-Fi offload
  • Reward risk: carrier offload revenue is concentrated and highly unequal; the August 2027 halving will not impact data transfer rewards, so Mobile hotspots in active venues are structurally safer through the next two halving cycles than IoT coverage hotspots
  • Verdict: deploy Mobile only if you have a confirmed high-traffic install location and can negotiate a venue agreement — the hardware investment is 2–5x an IoT setup, and the payoff is real only where cellular foot traffic is measurable and continuous
Decision shortcut
Choose IoT if: you own or can access rooftop or mast elevation (8 m+), your hex has fewer than 10 active hotspots within a 300 m radius, and you are comfortable with a $3–$45/month return on a $500 all-in deployment. Choose Mobile if: you own, manage, or have a venue agreement at a location with demonstrable daily cellular foot traffic — a coffee shop, hotel lobby, transit station, or retail store — and you can dedicate a 100 Mbps fiber line to the hotspot. Choose neither if: you are deploying in a dense urban apartment block with no elevation access, no commercial foot traffic, and no interest in a 12–36 month payback horizon.

Prices are typical US/EU 2026 retail or eBay/Reddit second-hand observation. Status "active" means the vendor still ships firmware updates and onboarding works through the standard Helium Wallet flow. MNTD Goldspot (IoT) — The continuity pick. MNTD (formerly RAK's consumer-facing Helium brand) was the first manufacturer to ship Helium-branded hardware and remains the most firmware-current vendor in the IoT subnet. 8 GB RAM, premium chassis, and VIP support that actually responds. Pair it with a 5.8 dBi antenna and an LMR-400 cable run, mount as high as your local ordinance permits, and you have an IoT deployment that will not require touching for 24 months.
SenseCAP M2 Pro (IoT) — The build-quality pick. Aluminum chassis with an integrated heatsink and active cooling, designed by Seeed Studio to survive industrial temperature ranges. 8 GB RAM, same firmware ecosystem as MNTD, slightly cheaper. If you are deploying in a hot attic or a humid environment, this is the unit.
Helium Mobile Outdoor Wi-Fi Hotspot (Mobile) — The Carrier Offload pick. Helium-branded, fully integrated into the Mobile subnet onboarding flow, weatherproof. The right unit for a rooftop or facade install in a high-traffic district. Pair it with a dedicated 100 Mbps fiber line and a clean LOS angle to the street, and you are eligible for full carrier offload payouts.
FreedomFi + Baicells CBRS (Mobile, high-density only) — The commercial pick. Only deploy this if you have a venue contract (mall, casino, stadium, hotel, university campus) where thousands of cellular users pass through daily. The capex is $1,800–$2,500 plus mounting and a CBRS Spectrum Access System (SAS) coordination fee. The payout, in the right venue, can clear $50–$200/day; in the wrong venue, you will not break even.

The buying rule for 2026: if the vendor has not pushed a firmware update in the last six months and is not on the Helium Foundation's active partner list, buy used or do not buy. The Mobile subnet hardware in particular requires active firmware support to remain onboard-able through the Helium Wallet flow.
Placement and antennas — the single biggest earnings multiplier
Hardware brand barely matters compared to where you put the hardware. An MNTD Goldspot on a windowsill earns the same as a Bobcat on a windowsill — almost nothing. Either unit on a 8 m mast above a suburban roof, with a clean fresnel zone, earns 5–10× the windowsill rate. What is the HNT max supply?
Approximately 223 million HNT, following HIP-20. The originally targeted max supply was 240M, but year-one block time issues on the legacy Helium chain resulted in roughly 17M HNT less issuance than scheduled. The reduction was ratified into the protocol via HIP-20.

What is a Data Credit (DC) and how much does it cost?
1 Data Credit equals exactly $0.00001 USD, priced via the Pyth oracle on Solana. DCs are created by burning HNT. IoT applications burn 1 DC per 24-byte payload chunk. Mobile bills at $0.50/GB, which works out to 50,000 DC per gigabyte. DCs are non-transferable after minting and can only be delegated to an OUI wallet once.

How much HNT does it cost to onboard a Helium hotspot?
IoT onboarding plus assert: approximately $50 in DC total, paid in HNT from your wallet at the time of onboarding ($40 onboarding + $10 IoT location assert). Mobile Outdoor Wi-Fi assert is $20 in DC per HIP-89; Mobile Indoor Wi-Fi assert is $10. CBRS small-cell assert is higher and typically processed through the FreedomFi Gateway provisioning flow. All fees are revised periodically by Helium Foundation governance.

What happened to the Helium Mobile $20/month plan?
It was replaced. The current Helium Mobile plan tiers as of Q4 2025 are Zero ($0/mo, limited), Sprout Kids ($5/mo, 3 GB), Air ($15/mo), and Infinity ($30/mo unlimited). Any guide citing the old $20/month plan is referencing a discontinued tier.

Are validators still required to earn Helium rewards?
No. Validators were retired entirely on April 18, 2023 when the network migrated to Solana. The Oracle pipeline (PoC Ingestion → PoC Verifier → Rewards) handles all reward distribution. Hotspot owners now receive ~7% more in emissions because the validator share was reallocated to subDAO reward pools.

How many Helium hotspots are active in 2026?
Roughly 43,033 active IoT hotspots and 121,138 active Mobile hotspots as of Q4 2025, per Messari's State of Helium report. Pre-migration cumulative IoT onboarding peaked above 342,000 but the active count has contracted significantly. Mobile is the growth segment, up 8.5% quarter-over-quarter at the Q4 2025 close.

What is veHNT and do I need it?
veHNT is "vote-escrowed HNT" — HNT locked for 0–4 years to participate in Helium governance and direct subnet emission allocation. You do not need veHNT to earn rewards from running a hotspot. You need veHNT only if you want to vote on HIPs, delegate to a subDAO's Utility Score, or boost specific hexes. Most hotspot operators never touch veHNT.

Can I run a Helium hotspot on Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet?
Yes for most hotspots, but wired Ethernet is strongly preferred. Wi-Fi backhaul introduces latency variability that can suppress witness rewards and increase RELAYED status risk. If you must use Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz with strong signal (-60 dBm or better) and a router not under heavy concurrent load.

Does power consumption matter for a Helium hotspot?
Marginally. IoT hotspots draw ~5 W, costing roughly $5/year in US electricity. Mobile Wi-Fi units draw 8–15 W; CBRS small cells draw 30–60 W. Electricity is a rounding error for IoT economics and a small operating cost for Mobile. The bigger lever is the dedicated internet line for Mobile, which can run $30–$80/month.

Forward port 44158 if you are relayed. Swap legacy IOT and MOBILE to HNT via the Helium Wallet at your leisure.
