The MicroBT Whatsminer M78 is the standard bin model in the 7 kW immersion tier, producing 440 TH/s at 7,000W. The M78S (top bin) produces 472 TH/s at the same power. Difference: 32 TH/s, or roughly 7 percent less hashrate from standard grade chips.

For volume fleet buyers, the M78 has a specific role. If you are purchasing 50 or 100 immersion units and your primary constraint is hardware budget rather than electricity cost, the M78's lower per unit price lets you deploy more machines. More machines at 440 TH/s can produce higher total fleet hashrate than fewer machines at 472 TH/s depending on the price gap between bins.

This math changes at higher electricity rates. Above $0.05 per kWh, the 7 percent efficiency gap between bins starts compounding meaningfully. At $0.03 per kWh, the daily cost difference per unit is negligible and total machine count wins.
